Dear Dr Shyeh
As an Irishman who has lived and worked in Taiwan, I feel compelled to send you this letter of support, and let you know that I received the news about your release with immense joy.
And when you are fully cleared of all charges, I will react with even more joy.
What does an Irishman care about Taiwan, you might be asking yourself.
Well, it is true that the two countries (Yes, I believe that Taiwan is
a fully independent country) have never had a lot of historical
interaction.
However, there are a few similarities:
1 - Like Taiwan, the colour of Ireland is green (ever heard about Ireland being referred to as the Emerald Island?)
2 - like Taiwan, Ireland has a tiger economy (ever heard of the so called Celtic Tiger?)
3 - like Taiwan, Ireland spent long centuries under foreign colonial
domination, and this is the main reason why I totally identify with the
cause of Taiwanese
self-determination.
Finally, having worked inside prisons as a volunteer, I can see for myself how jail is uncomfortable even for hardened criminals, let alone professional people like yourself ( I have seen your CV, really impressive!!! ) who have spent all their lives studying and doing research, so I can imagine the utter shock you went through when you were forced to swap a lab for a prison cell.
